Building links needs more thought

Link building is not a science. There are several things which cannot be done without breaking the rules of search engines. However, giving up on link building strategies is not an option. It is essential to pursue a site-specific strategy which ticks all of the right boxes.

This means that conventional and proven methods have to be combined with more innovative approaches if a site is going to perform very impressively. Basic elements of a strategy include using high quality content provision and the clever use of social media. However, these basic tactics can be very sophisticated in practice so the distinction between them can break down.

Alternatives to conventional blogging

High-grade content can gradually build a site into an authority in its sector. Authoritative sites will get the decent links which a campaign aims for. Content must be accurate, well written and of genuine interest to the target audience. Stories need to be interpreted in an intelligent manner. It also helps if the content is quick to seize on the latest trends. However, conventional blogging may need spicing up a bit if a site is going to beat the competition. This means there is room for a variety of relatively fresh techniques.

E-books may be worth looking at

One method which some firms use is to offer free e-books from their site. Others offer e-books for very reasonable prices. Some e-book marketplaces do have minimum prices, so this must be kept in mind. It’s important to note that this technique is not appropriate for every site. In addition, producing even a short e-book can be time-consuming. However, if the e-books do attract a lot of attention, this can be justified.

Consider interviewing someone important

Another method is to interview an influential individual. It might not be possible to get a well-known celebrity on board but this certainly isn’t necessary or, in many cases, desirable. Writers, bloggers and popular Twitter users could all be possible interview candidates. Paying for links is a no-no, but this kind of mutually satisfactory arrangement is acceptable and often very effective.

Art can give life to a site

Another useful technique is to commission work from a photographer or another type of artist. Budgetary constraints may be a factor here. However, there are plenty of competent individuals out there who will not ask for much money. They can help a site look the part. It is also sometimes useful to put a relevant video on YouTube. As with a great deal of search engine optimisation, one size does not fit all.

Use Twitter realistically and form genuine relationships

Different types of social media can be employed in the hunt for high quality links. However, this does not mean that focusing on one network for learning purposes is mistaken. Twitter can be a good source of links, but patience and realism are as necessary as technique if success is to be sustained. Developing a sharing attitude is critical; being too pushy will not work. Having short, pleasant conversations can boost credibility.
