After the autumn half term rush for holidays that British travel operators experienced this year, one thing was very much clear. The popularity of winter holidays is higher than ever, and the exodus we are likely to see over the Christmas period is likely to be even more impressive.
There are many reasons for the surge in popularity of winter breaks, but our poor summer is likely to have contributed greatly. However, whilst winter sun holidays are indeed becoming more popular, so are ski holidays, and so it is not just the need for sun that is making winter a far more popular time to get away.
The combination of the poor weather we have been experiencing of late and the huge array of events to enjoy over the summer have meant that more and more people are looking to spend their winters away when there is far less to look forward to than in the summer. However, whilst it may seem like getting away to the warmest destinations may make the most sense, those who want a bit more from a holiday are heading for the slopes instead.
Skiing holidays offer the perfect combination of fun, beauty, and even surprising amounts of sun. Whilst it may be cold up in the highest peaks, the sun can still be surprisingly warm, and it is not uncommon to see people actually enjoying a bit of sunbathing amongst the many skiers.
In fact, destinations such as Rome and Marrakech which used to be two of the most popular autumn/winter destinations are falling out of favour as people are looking for destinations that are only really worth visiting in the winter. In turn, those heading away not only get a break from the terrible weather at home, but also a chance to enjoy a destination that truly wouldn’t be the same at any other time and that will truly be different to the normal run of the mill holidays they might have been on.
