It claimed that because the housing market remains “stuck in the doldrums”, people are keen to boost the look and feel of their abodes.

More than 50 per cent of the chartered surveyors it polled stated that the slow sales market is prompting a growing number of consumers to make home improvements rather than move to new houses or flats.

RICS also noted that while this trend applies to all areas of the country, people living in the north-west of England are particularly likely to stay put and renovate.

However, in a word of warning to consumers, the organisation stated: “Most properties have expansion or improvement potential, but we would advise homeowners to think about how much they are investing and their key motivator before undertaking major projects.

“It is important to consider the style and age of the property before undertaking any works. Remember, when you do eventfully look to sell, what appeals to you may not appeal to potential buyers. Costly disappointments can be avoided by prior planning and research.”
