The range of different bowling balls available
Although traditionally seen as an American past time, ten pin bowling is a hobby enjoyed across the globe. In fact, there are a whopping 10 million bowlers who compete on an amateur or professional level and petitions have even sprung up for it to become an Olympic sport.
For bowling enthusiasts everywhere their bowling ball is incredibly important. Different balls exist for the different levels of experience and skill and many bowlers may own more than one ball to ensure excellence at different stages of their game. The starting point for most bowlers will be polyester bowling balls. Great for shooting straight down a lane, they are non-aggressive and offer long skid potential. Available in a range of patterns and designs, these bowling balls let a bowler set off on their bowling journey in style.
Urethane bowling balls are great for the more experienced bowler. They allow the bowler to determine entry angel far better than polyester balls and are therefore fantastic for bowlers who have medium to high skill levels. A controlled skid is possible although it’s worth bearing in mind that the skid potential isn’t as long as that of its polyester counterpart. Urethane balls are better for hooking and aiming at awkwardly placed pins.
Recent years have seen reactive bowling balls emerge. The tiny surface holes absorb oil and this absorption gives far greater friction between the ball and the bowling lane. Cleverly, reactive balls were designed to react differently on areas of the lane with high oil levels than the drier back area of the lane. Again, a controlled skid is possible and the added traction adds to the reactivity of this type of ball.
Finger hole positioning plays a crucial part in the performance of bowling balls. A competing bowler will no doubt want to have bespoke holes drilled to improve performance. As well as improving the comfort experienced when bowling, the positioning of the holes determines the speed, angle and delivery, ultimately affecting performance. Finger holes can be contoured to fit a bowler’s individual fingers and their position.
