What is Addiction?

Before someone can understand that they need help for an addiction, they will need to understand what addiction really is. There are many myths about addiction, but really one can become addicted to almost anything, not just Class A drugs. Once addiction is understood, it is far easier for someone to make sense of how their body and mind are being affected and in turn overcome their addiction.

There are many things that can lead to addiction and many things that one can be addicted to. From chocolate to sex, even things that are good for us in certain quantities can become addictive and begin to have a serious affect on our lives.

The most common addictions still remain those of drugs and alcohol. However, even here there is a lot of confusion about what exactly constitutes addiction and just how addictive certain substances are. Many people do not consider drug rehab as they have been told that marijuana is not addictive. However, many people can become extremely psychologically dependant on the drug and for some it may be even harder to come off pot that from drugs that are class A.

This is another important point about drugs and the need for drug rehab – different people are affected by different drugs in different ways. Just as one person may be able to smoke cigarettes regularly and still be able to stop whenever they want, the next person may crave them after just their first few.

Therefore, addiction is different for everyone and trying to understand if you need drug or alcohol rehab will be about honestly addressing your own needs for the substance. As they say, admitting you have an addiction is the first step to being cured, and whether it is you or a family member that may be physically or psychologically dependent on a substance, the important thing is to get drug or alcohol rehab as early as possible.
