OLAT Training FAQs | Your Questions Answered

OLAT stands for Operator Licence Awareness Training, covered in a series of courses which aim to ensure those who are responsible for restricted loads and haulage are aware of transport legislation and compliance.

The ‘O’ licence that individuals get upon completion of an OLAT training course is proof that they are aware of their legal responsibility in handling vehicles over 3.5 tonnes for business use or managing passenger loads. It is an add-on for those who hold a restricted operator licence, as it covers areas like driver hours, traffic enforcement rules, transport issues, and how to manage a fleet of drivers.

Not sure where to start when it comes to licences and OLAT courses? Here are some of the most common FAQs we see around this topic, and their answers.

Who Needs OLAT Training?

OLAT training is recommended for businesses that hold a restricted operator licence, which either allows that business to use vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes for internal use or enables them to transport passengers. It communicates the legal regulations and requirements of both the business and its drivers and is something that all those who cover haulage or transport passengers should do every few years.

One thing worth noting is that, even if a business has a dedicated transport manager whose role it is to manage haulage and compliance, directors and even drivers should complete the relevant OLAT training to stay ahead of changes to the regulations.

What OLAT Training Course Do I Need?

There are two types of OLAT training course, one covering road haulage, while the other is specific to the passenger transport sector. It is important that you select the right OLAT course to complement the restricted operator licence you hold, despite the two courses covering many of the same areas.

The LGV OLAT course is built for those in the haulage sector and ensures they are legally compliant as an operator on the outskirts of the transport sector. PCV OLAT training is about safe passenger transport and ensuring the vehicle and driver standards are in line with industry compliance.

What is the Outcome of Successful OLAT Training?

OLAT training is something ongoing, in that those active in the transport sector should undergo refresher training every few years to stay on top of compliance and regulations. It is essential that a business understands and complies with the licence regulations and undertakings in order to achieve a high compliance score. This underpins legal requirements but also keeps drivers and passengers/haulage loads safe and secure.
