Can You Share a Cat?

Should you buy a kitten with a family member, friend or partner and later the two of you end up living in different places, it is likely that ownership of the cat is going to come under question. As such, many people will wonder about the logistics of sharing the cat and wonder whether or not that moving cats between two different locations will be a problem.

By looking online, you will find all sorts of information on the subject of sharing cats and general cat care. Unfortunately though, the majority of this advice is from people with no real understanding of the matter and will be lambasting people for even considering such a thing.

Yes, cats are creatures of habit. However, they are also more than happy to visit several different places every day and call numerous different places home. Therefore they will almost certainly very quickly adapt to new surroundings and have no problems finding themselves in a new location, especially once they get used to this second house.

There will be certain things to take into account though. Cat care is not about overprotecting your pet and worrying about whether such a thing will affect them, but instead responding to the needs of your pet. All cats will be different and if sharing your feline friend does indeed seem to trouble your pet and they end up acting differently, then it may well be a sign that it is not right for that individual kitten.

However, even if they are happy with the change, it will be important that you have continuity in terms of toys and cat food so they feel comfortable in each place and so their diet is not affected. A sudden change in cat food can cause problems for cats and therefore it may be far more important to simply ensure continuity of such things than worrying about whether sharing the cat itself will cause problems.
