Canary Islands Holidays

Canary Island holidays offer something for everyone. In total, there are seven islands in the Canary Island group.

The main islands people visit for their holidays are Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Palma. Many people have never even heard of the small islands of Alengranza, Graciosa, Hierro and La Gomera or the 5 small unpopulated rocks, which some also categorise as islands.

Of all the islands Gran Canaria and Tenerife are the two most popular tourist destinations. Both islands rely heavily on the tourist industries, so the welcome you get is especially warm.

Holidaying in Tenerife

With a population of just over 900,000 Tenerife is the biggest of the islands. As well as fantastic beaches and wildlife, it is famous for its volcanic landscape, a unique environment many people find intriguing and bizarrely beautiful. The dormant volcano Mount Teide is one of the islands most popular tourist destinations.

Every year, 3.4 million foreigners visit the island of Tenerife and they are joined by tens of thousands of Spanish nationals who also love to holiday there. By far the biggest group of tourists are the British who normally represent over 35% of the visitors.

The island offers mostly three and four star accommodation. Something the local government are trying to change. To encourage people to build more five star facilities they have recently put a halt to further lower star hotels being built. This breathing space has been good for the island and it has encouraged many of the existing facilities to be upgraded.

Holidaying on Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the second largest island of the Canary Islands group. It is famous for its eclectic mix of landscapes, which produce a wide array of climates. This strange mix means that there is plenty to see and do if you love the outdoors and wildlife. There is even a small area of jungle on the island.

Every year 2.2 million tourists visit the island. Because the north is cooler, most people visit the south of the island. They do so because of the beautiful beaches and surrounding countryside.
