Teeth brushing app created

When people visit their dentist in Manchester city centre, they may be given advice on how best to brush their teeth. Getting this right can help to prevent dental and gum problems from developing, so it is well worth people’s while.

One man who is determined to ensure consumers brush correctly is Ben Underwood. The dentist has developed a special smartphone app designed to show users how long to use their toothbrushes for, the York Press reports.

The app plays two minutes of people’s favourite song for them to brush along to.

According to the publication, Brush DJ is “quickly turning into a global phenomenon” after being downloaded in 150 countries. Also, the app was awarded Best Dental Innovation at a prestigious industry award ceremony in London.

Commenting on his creation, Mr Underwood said: “When you are at university you are always told to get people to listen to music while they are brushing their teeth. Most pop songs are two to three minutes long and that’s roughly the length of time you need to be brushing your teeth for.”

He added: “I went to a company called AppWare in Wetherby with some rough designs and they helped develop it. It’s definitely a Yorkshire project.”

Talking about the accolade he received, the dentist remarked: “Winning the award has been a great honour and made all the work that has gone in to the development of Brush DJ worthwhile. This year is going to be very exciting with the launch of a new website, more videos showing how to carry out basic oral hygiene tasks and a version of the app for Blackberry and Windows smartphones.”

As well as brushing their teeth properly, consumers should make sure they attend regular checkups at their city centre dentist Manchester. Frequent visits help ensure that any dental problems are picked up quickly, making them easier to deal with.
