The importance of public liability insurance

In the Bouley Bay area of Jersey, there used to be a pontoon that proved incredibly popular with visitors and locals alike. However, following many years of neglect, it was eventually removed by the Port of Jersey, amid fears it was dangerous.

Now though, the pontoon could well be making a comeback, with the Port of Jersey agreeing to reinstate the pontoon by the spring of 2013 following support from local businesses.

Public liability insurance

The Port of Jersey has also said it is happy to take responsibility for the mooring chains of the pontoon until 2015. However, key to the return of the pontoon is that public liability insurance is in effect, to ensure there is adequate protection for all who plan to use the site.

This is something the business group, who are presently putting together an association to take control of the pontoon and its maintenance, are happy to provide. Ray Hine, from the Port of Jersey said:

“Once a new association has been established we will meet with its members and find a future way forward that is of benefit to everyone.”

It is essential that all business groups and organisations serving or providing a service to the public have the right liability insurance in place. Providing cover should a member of the public accidentally be injured or harmed at the fault of a business ensures adequate compensation will be provided.

Such public liability claims are common; covering such things as slips, trips and falls. With the right cover, all legal fees and expenses are taken care of through the claim and all awards covered where fault is found.

It is important to understand that this cover only applies to members of the public. Employers liability insurance will be needed to cover accidents resulting in injuries to members of staff.
