Liverpool shoppers take advantage of summer sales

Lots of people head to the shops in Liverpool to stock up on a range of items. After all, Liverpool shopping has built up an impressive reputation over the years and consumers travel to the city from miles around to check out what is on offer.

This summer, people have been taking advantage of some impressive deals. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the Consumer Prices Index fell to 2.4 per cent last month. This was a decrease from the 2.8 per cent recorded in May and the drop was said to be caused by lower food, fuel and clothing prices.

Meanwhile, the Retail Prices Index slid from 3.1 per cent to 2.8 per cent in June.

Those who travelled to the shops in Liverpool to buy clothing and footwear may have been particularly lucky during the 30-day period as it was items like this that showed the biggest falls in price. They dropped in cost by 4.2 per cent and the ONS suggested this could have been because retailers started their summer sales earlier than usual.

Responding to the figures, retail analyst at Conlumino Neil Saunders told the BBC: “If inflation continues to drop back at this pace, wage settlements will outstrip inflationary growth by the fourth quarter meaning we will see a return to growth in real disposable income.”

Meanwhile, RBS economist Ross Walker remarked: “We thought we would see some slightly more generous price discounting as the early summer sales kicked in, but nothing on this scale.”

It is thought that the weather played a big role in the price falls. So far, much of the summer has been blighted by heavy rain and even flooding in certain areas.

While the conditions have not been pleasant for those who wanted to enjoy some sunshine, they might have been welcomed by bargain hunters intent on making the most of Liverpool shopping.
