Expert draws attention to importance of data security

Running a company is not easy and there are many issues for bosses to focus on. As well as managing their staff members, controlling the quality of their output and trying to optimise their profits, managers also have to take data security matters seriously. As part of their efforts to control sensitive information, many companies make use of confidential shredding services, including paper shredding.

Drawing attention to the significance of information control, a digital security expert recently noted that preventing computer-related security breaches is about much more than simply encrypting data.

Director at sproutIT.co.uk Matt Torrens stated that it is also important for data controllers to secure private and confidential information. He remarked: “Data security is obviously pretty far-reaching, it’s not just encryption, it’s passwords and shared computer systems, Windows updates and antivirus protection.”

The specialist added: “It’s not just down to the data controller in practical terms, it’s down to the IT department to actively pursue those safeguards.”

Meanwhile, Mr Torrens went on to point out that data breaches can do major harm to businesses’ reputations. According to the director, news of such problems tends to spread like “wildfire” after being publicised in the press.

Bearing in mind the importance of information control, it is no surprise that many organisations take advantage of specialist paper shredding and other confidential information destruction services. By bringing in expert confidential shredding firms to help them with this task, bosses can achieve greater peace of mind.

Meanwhile, if managers fail to pay sufficient heed to matters like this, they can suffer significant ill-effects. If a breach occurs, they may face costly and damaging legal proceedings and, depending on the nature of the offence, they might be forced to compensate the affected parties.

In addition, long-term harm can be done to their reputations. While building up a positive image takes a long time in the world of enterprise, in a matter of moments, this can be destroyed.
