Ladies Golf Back in the Spotlight

There is an old myth that suggests that the name golf was created as an acronym of Gentleman Only, Ladies Forbidden. However, not only has that never been true, with ladies playing as long ago as the 16th Century, but today there are probably just as many women playing the game as men.

By the 19th Century, unions had been formed for women golfers, and it was these that introduced the system of handicapping, making women hugely influential on the modern game, and today ladies can often be seen competing alongside men in major competitions.

Throughout history, women’s golf has been extremely important, and a recent exhibition at the British Golf Museum was able to highlight the sport in all its glory.
