Planning Maps

Do you know what planning maps do for you? You may not think about it, but planning maps form the structure of your local area. Building for the sake of building is disorganised, layering buildings over old structures are common, but they must have order to be concise and easy to navigate for vehicles and pedestrians. The reason planning maps exist are to make sense of what the building is going to be once it is constructed. The planning maps must show the dimensions in terms of the space it takes up on the ground through the width or circumference, and also how high it will be when it’s finished. The planning maps must also show things such as entrances, exits, floor plans, and much more. You take a lot of what planning maps do for granted. Our world would not look like it is today without planning maps, instead it would be a chaotic and disorganised landscape, no sense of design nor or ergonomic shape. In terms of balance of man-made structures and nature, planning maps are also important as they show the breaking up of these elements. Many modern man-made structures have areas of grass or plant life in order to break up the oppressively dull nature of grey man-made structures, and planning maps account for this.

If you design planning maps you need to be aware of the basics of design. The shape and size of planning maps are often quite large to show all the finer details, and as a result they often take a lot of time to make. Previously planning maps were made with large reams of paper that would then have the planning maps manually drawn onto them before being copied and shipped off to the relevant parties. Today a lot of planning maps are done using specialised illustration software or through customised software made exclusively for planning maps and their design. The benefit of using software for planning maps is quite obvious as it dramatically takes down the amount of time required for physically making the planning maps as well as designing them from the ground up.
