Sound testing requirements

Since 2003, building regulations have required sound testing to be completed in houses , or dwellings as they are commonly referred to in the regulations. Schools are also covered in the same regulations. The requirements of the regulations have meant that construction companies developing new houses, redeveloping existing dwellings or constructing schools must carry out a sound test to determine whether the sound insulation provides enough acoustic protection. This testing must be done in at least 10% of the development but construction companies can opt to carry out testing in more of the development if they wish.

Sound testing must be carried out by a qualified and accredited test body, rather than a member of the construction team. There are two types of sound tests. Airborne sound testing should be carried out on a separating wall or floor. This involves a loudspeaker emitting a constant noise which is then measured on the other side of the partition. For party walls, airborne sound testing is sufficient. For compartment floors another test must be carried out. An impact sound insulation test involves the use of a tapping machine which is used on the floor and is measured from the dwelling below. The findings of both tests must be below those specified in the building regulations. If not, more insulation is required before they can be inhabited.

Precision and accuracy are vital and that is why it’s crucial that a test body is UKAS accredited. Qualified sound test engineers should also hold relevant qualifications and be members of the Institute of Acoustics. It’s also vital that tests are carried out in unfurnished rooms and impact sound testing should be done before carpets are laid. Doors and windows should be closed to avoid distortion of the test results. High quality, regularly calibrated equipment should be used to provide reliable results.

Soundadviceacoustics.co.uk are noise consultants with over 15 years experience. They are fully UKAS accredited and their engineers are all members of the Institute of Acoustics. Their results will be available for perusal just five to seven days after the testing has been completed.
