Why Do We Send Birthday Cards?

Sending greeting cards is a way to let someone know that we are thinking of them and that we have taken the time to find a card we feel is right for them and have used it to send them wishes on a certain occasion. But why do we really send them, and do they really have a place in our lives now that the internet has made keeping in touch easier than ever?

Ultimately, sending cards to mark special occasions could actually be more important than ever in this digital age. In years gone by, the only way we had of keeping in touch with people would be by letter and therefore cards formed an important part of keeping in touch. Today, with it being so easy to learn of someone’s birthday online and to write on their wall or send them a quick email, the actual process of marking a special occasion has become one that almost has no meaning whatsoever. After all, who has truly felt special when someone has written the simple words ‘Happy Birthday’ on their social networking page?

Today, sending birthday cards will mark out real friends and acquaintances. If you really wish to make a certain person’s day special then, by sending a card, you will show that you have put prior thought into the occasion and that you wanted to make an effort in wishing them well. If you merely write on their wall, you will merely fall in line with a number of people the recipient doesn’t know particularly well, and you may well find that they feel a bit disappointed that you didn’t make more effort to help them celebrate their big day.

Of course, with so few great cards on sale in the shops, it is not always particularly inviting to spend hours searching for a card that might not actually be something that is anywhere near perfect. As such, it may be worth designing your own card online and sending a very personalised card, not only making the process more fun for you, but also showing you care even more than if you had picked a generic card off the shelf.
